Inside EMPHATICaL: Partner Spotlight on Politecnico di Milano

As part of our series “Inside EMPHATICaL”, we’re introducing the organisations making our vision possible. The consortium brings together 21 partners from 11 European countries, covering the entire value chain for technical, environmental, social, and economic innovation.

Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI), represented in the projectby its Department of Energy (Dipartimento di Energia), is one of Italy’s leading technical universities and a powerhouse in process engineering.

In the EMPHATICaL project, POLIMI is at the helm of the technical and economic strategy. Their team is responsible for:

• CO₂ Purification: Using advanced Aspen Plus and Matlab modelling to design the purification unit that transforms impure CO₂ into high-grade feedstock for methanol synthesis.
• System Integration: Leading the evaluation of the entire EMPHATICaL concept, ensuring the plant integrates seamlessly with variable renewable energy and transport infrastructure.

• Performance Metrics: Computing the vital technical, economic, and environmental KPIs to prove the project's real-world viability.
