On 30 October, EMPHATICaL and Bio-MeGaFuel brought together experts for the webinar “Intensified (bio)methanol production”, exploring different technological pathways towards more efficient and sustainable methanol production.
The session opened with introductions to both projects. Amir H. Soleimani Salim from RISE Research Institutes of Sweden presented Bio-MeGaFuel, while Marija Saric from TNO introduced EMPHATICaL and its approach to producing e-methanol from residual CO and CO₂ gases from highly electrified metallurgical processes, using captured CO₂, green hydrogen and an integrated conversion process.
The technical presentations covered three different approaches:
- Lucas Poker, Delft University of Technology, presented e-methanol production using heat pump assisted distillation, highlighting opportunities to improve energy efficiency through electrified purification.
- Avishek Goel, GIDARA Energy, explored fluidised bed gasification of biomass and waste for the production of sustainable fuels and chemicals.
- Prof. Fausto Gallucci, 1 CUBE, presented membrane reactors for methanol production, focusing on process intensification through the integration of reaction and separation.
Together, the presentations highlighted the diversity of technologies and carbon sources being explored to make methanol production more sustainable, from industrial CO₂ and renewable hydrogen to biomass and waste.
Thank you to all speakers for sharing their expertise, to Bio-MeGaFuel for the collaboration, and to everyone who joined the webinar.
