EMPHATICaL Featured in Carbon Pulse Interview: Revolutionising Metallurgical Decarbonisation with E-Methanol Production

December 19, 2024

The EMPHATICaL project was recently highlighted in an interview with Carbon Pulse, an online journal covering carbon markets, greenhouse gas pricing, and climate policy.

In the interview, Project Coordinator Yvonne van Delft and Senior Scientist and Technical Lead Marija Saric discussed how EMPHATICaL is tackling significant challenges within the European metallurgical industry, such as escalating energy costs, global competition, and the evolving regulatory landscape. They provided insights into the project’s innovative use of calcium looping technology to capture CO2 and green hydrogen to produce e-methanol, as well as the advanced distillation column (ADC) technology, which improves energy efficiency and reduces production costs by 25%.

The article also detailed EMPHATICaL’s plans to design and build a demonstrator facility in Luleå, Sweden, with the potential to produce 1 tonne of e-methanol per day. This project aims to decarbonise the metallurgical sector, create sustainable fuel sources, and contribute to Europe’s climate targets for 2050.

We are pleased to see EMPHATICaL's unique approach recognised and look forward to continuing our work towards a more sustainable European industry.
