Driving the Metallurgical Industry Towards Zero Emissions and Circular Carbon

The European Union has awarded a €17 million grant to the EMPHATICaL project, which will support the metallurgical industry towards achieving zero emissions and carbon circularity by 2050.

Launched in November 2024, EMPHATICAL will develop a First-of-a-Kind (FOAK) demonstrator plant over the next 4.5 years, aiming at integrating cutting-edge technologies to capture and convert CO₂ into e-methanol, using green hydrogen and renewable energy.

Key Highlights of EMPHATICAL:

• ‍Innovative CO₂ Capture: The project will demonstrate an energy-efficient process to capture residual CO and CO₂ gases from electrified metallurgical industries.
• ‍Electrified Metallurgy & Methanol Production: The project aims to validate a sustainable, cost-effective, and scalable process that can reduce CO₂ emissions while creating valuable products like e-methanol.‍
• Aims for 41 Million Tons of CO₂ Reduction by 2050, contributing significantly to meeting climate goals.

The project consortium brings together 17 leading partners from across Europe and industry players.

This initiative marks a significant step forward in transforming CO₂ emissions into valuable products, helping the metallurgical industry meet its sustainability goals.
