Driving the Metallurgical Industry Towards Zero Emissions and Circular Carbon
November 29, 2024

The European Union has awarded a €17 million grant to the EMPHATICaL project, which will support the metallurgical industry towards achieving zero emissions and carbon circularity by 2050.
Launched in November 2024, EMPHATICAL will develop a First-of-a-Kind (FOAK) demonstrator plant over the next 4.5 years, aiming at integrating cutting-edge technologies to capture and convert CO2 into e-methanol, using green hydrogen and renewable energy.
Key Highlights of EMPHATICAL:
- Innovative CO2 Capture: The project will demonstrate an energy-efficient process to capture residual CO and CO2 gases from electrified metallurgical industries.
- Electrified Metallurgy & Methanol Production: The project aims to validate a sustainable, cost-effective, and scalable process that can reduce CO2 emissions while creating valuable products like e-methanol.
- Aims for 41 Million Tons of CO2 Reduction by 2050, contributing significantly to meeting climate goals.
The project consortium brings together 17 leading partners from across Europe and industry players.
This initiative marks a significant step forward in transforming CO2 emissions into valuable products, helping the metallurgical industry meet its sustainability goals.
